This drug has a generic
name Stavudine, which is an antiviral drug that
prevents the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) virus from spreading in the
body. It is used for the treatment of HIV/ AIDs. This medicine however, will
not cure the body of HIV. It is sold under various trade names including Zerit
and Stavir (made by Cipla).
Important
information about Stavudine
You should avoid taking Stavudine if you have any known allergy
with this medicine or any of its ingredients. Notify your doctor well in
advance if you have following conditions: kidney disease, diabetes, or if you
have used a similar medicine (similar to Stavudine) in the past such as
abacavir, didanosine, emtricitabine, or others. This is to ensure whether it is
safe for you or not. Also, remember that avoid Stavudine if you are already
taking a combination HIV medicine which contains zidovudine.
Lactic acidosis has been observed in some people who are
taking Stavudine. The initial stage symptoms of lactic acidosis may deteriorate
over the time and can prove fatal. You must seek medical care immediately when
you encounter the first sign of lactic acidosis such as muscle pain or
weakness, breathing trouble, numb or cold feeling in the limbs, stomach pain,
or nausea with vomiting. It can also cause severe damage to your liver or
pancreas. Get medical attention quickly if you have any of the following
conditions of liver damage or pancreas damage: sever pain in upper stomach
which advances to the back, nausea and vomiting, fast heartbeats, itching, loss
of appetite, dark urine, clay colored stools, or jaundice.
It belongs to FDA pregnancy category C drug. It is not known
whether this drug can harm an unborn baby if taken during the pregnancy time.
However, HIV can be passed into the baby if mother is not treated safely during
pregnancy.

Dosage

increase the risk of bone loss.
It can also cause nerve complications in the hands, feet,
or legs also termed as peripheral neuropathy. Symptoms to nerve problems are
numbness, tingling, muscle weakness or decreased muscle control. Seek medical
care if you experience any of the above conditions.
Interaction
with other drugs
Many other drugs can
interact with Stavudine including didanosine, doxorubicin, hydroxyurea,
interferon-alfa, or ribavirin. There may be some other drugs which can interact
