This drug constitutes a generic name Rizatriptan, which is
mainly prescribed to treat migraine headaches. It narrows down blood vessels around
the brain. This medicine also reduces the substances in the body that are
responsible for causing migraine symptoms such as headache, nausea, sensitivity
to light and sound, and other symptoms. Rizatriptan will only treat a migraine
attack; it will not stop or reduce the attacks from occurring. This drug is
sold under various trade names, to name a few of them are Maxalt and Rizact
(made by Cipla). It may also be given for other conditions which are not listed
here.
Important
information about Rizatriptan
Rizatriptan anti migraine
medicine (Maxalt, Rizact) should not be taken for normal headaches. It must be
taken only after a doctor has confirmed that your headache is indeed a migraine
headache. This medicine is not recommended for someone below than 18 years. You
should avoid Rizatriptan antimigraine medicine if you are allergic to it, if
you have medical history of heart disease (coronary heart disease or angina),
have had heart attack or stroke, blood circulation problems, lack of blood
supply to the heart, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe liver disease,
ischemic bowel disease, or if your headache feels unusual (different from a
usual migraine headache). Always follow a gap of at least 2 hours between two
tablets of Rizatriptan.
It belongs to a class of FDA pregnancy C drug. It may be not
known whether it can harm an unborn baby if the drug has taken during the
pregnancy stage. It is always advisable to ask your doctor if it is safe to in
take this medicine while you are breast feeding.
Before
taking Rizatriptan
Before taking this
medicine, remember to discuss all the above mentioned points with your doctor.
Notify your doctor well in advance if you have following conditions: liver or
kidney disease, seizures, severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure, ischemic
bowel disease, a heart rhythm condition, coronary artery disease (or risk
factors such as diabetes, menopause, smoking, overweight or obesity, high
triglyceride levels, having a family history of coronary artery disease, above
40 years of age, or a woman who has had a hysterectomy). Some of these
conditions may not justify the use of this medicine. Your doctor will also
weigh these conditions with safe usage of this medicine and decide it whether
it is safe or not for your health.
Dosage
information
You should take
Rizatriptan strictly by following the instructions given by your doctor. Do not
alter the dosage unless your doctor advices you to do so. Prohibit the use of
this drug if the prescription period is over. All medicines are come with a
patient leaflet; you should go through the leaflet to know detailed
information. Overuse of this medication can result into serious condition or it
will make your migraines worse. Take Rizatriptan as soon as possible after you
experience headache symptoms, or after a migraine attack has already started.
You may be given this medication under medical supervision initially to check
if it causes any serious side effects.
If your headache doesn’t subside completely even after taking
the dose of this medicine, or relapses after going away, take another dose
after 2 hours. Generally, a maximum dose of 30 mg in 24 hours has recommended
for this medicine. If you are not watching any improvement in your condition,
seek medical care immediately. Inform your doctor if you have more than four
migraine attacks within a month. Always store the medicine in a cool and dry
place.
Note: The dosage may depend on a range of factors including age,
sex, drug allergies or seriousness of the condition among several other
factors. To ensure the

What if you miss a dose
As Rizatriptan is taken
on a need to need basis; you are not likely to miss a dose.
What
if you overdose
In case of an overdose,
seek medical attention immediately or contact your doctor. Overdose of this
drug may cause symptoms like tremors or shaking, redness on skin, breathing
problems, blue colored lips or fingernails, watery eyes or mouth, weakness,
lack of coordination, or seizures.
Things
and activities to avoid
Don’t take Rizatriptan
within a 24 hour interval of before or after taking other antimigraine medicine
like sumatriptan, eletriptan, zolmitriptan, or others; or ergot medications
like ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, or methylergonovine. Also, avoid taking
medicine if you have used any of the following MAO inhibitor medications in the
last 14 days: isocarboxazid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline,
tranylcypromine, or furazolidone.
This medicine may cause dizziness in your body by impacting on
your thinking capability and reflexes. Do not indulge in activities which
require high mental awareness until you are absolutely sure that you can do it
safely.
Side
Effects
A serious side effect
caused by Rizatriptan (Maxalt, Rizact) is rare. However, few people may
experience some serious side effects such as blue colored nails, coldness in
hand or feet, hearing changes, seizures, or mood changes. Rizatriptan may
increase the level of serotonin in the body and rarely causes a severe
condition which is termed as serotonin syndrome or toxicity. The danger of
acquiring this condition increases if you take other drug which is responsible
of leveraging serotonin in the body. Call your doctor right away if you
experience such symptoms. While, some common side effects pertaining to this
medicine are flushing, numbness, prickling, tingling sensation, warm feeling,

Interaction with other
drugs
Some other drugs may
interact with Rizatriptan and may lead to dreadful effect. Notify your doctor
if you are taking antidepressant such as citalopram, desvenlafaxine,
duloxetine, escitalopram,fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline, or
venlafaxine. Also, let your doctor know about all the medicines which you may
be using prior to this. . Never start a new medication without your doctor’s
