What is Pyrazinamide?
Pyrazinamide is an antibiotic
medication prescribed mainly for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB). It may
also be used for treatment of other infections. Pyrazinamide is available under
several trade names, one of which is Pyzina (made by Lupin).
Important Information about
Pyrazinamide
Do not take Pyrazinamide
(Pyzina) if you have a known allergy to it. Tell your doctor about it. Also,
let your doctor know in advance if you have any of the following conditions:
liver disease, gout, kidney disease, or diabetes mellitus.
Pyrazinamide is an FDA pregnancy
category C drug. Do not take this medication without your doctor's advice if
you are pregnant or breast feeding.
This medication can pass into
breast milk and harm a nursing baby.
You must complete the full
course of Pyrazinamide. If you do not complete the medication course as
prescribed, you may get a drug resistant infection which will be difficult to
treat with common antibiotics.

Pyrazinamide Side Effects
Pyrazinamide (Pyzina) like all
medications can cause side effects. However, not all people who take it will
experience a side effect. Side effects of this medication include fever,
nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, difficult
or painful urination, painful or swollen joints, worsening gout, and a rash. If
you feel that you have got a serious side effect due to this medication, get
medical help right away.
