This drug constitutes a generic name Norfloxacin that belongs to
a group of antibiotics called quinolones which prevent bacteria that causes
infections. The active ingredient Norfloxacin is a synthetic chemotherapeutic
agent, prescribed for the treatment of urinary tract infections and eye
infections. It works by killing sensitive bacteria.
Important
information about Norfloxacin
You should avoid taking
Norfloxacin, if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to it, other quinolone
antibiotics or any of the other ingredients present in it. Also, avoid this
tablet if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Do not take this
medicine if you have had pain, inflammation or rupture of tendons after taking
quinolone antibiotic, or if you have not reached puberty or are a teenager who
is still growing.
Take extra care in the following conditions: if you have history
of convulsions (symptoms include body twitching, jerking limbs, fits), or a
disease that increases the risk of having convulsions, if you suffer from
psychiatric disorders, hallucinations and or confusion, if you suffer from a
condition called myasthenia gravis (an auto-immune disease) which causes muscle
weakness, if you or any member of your family suffers from a deficiency
disorder where patients become, anaemic after taking certain drugs
(glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, G-6-PD deficiency) (symptoms of anaemia
include paleness and tiredness).
Norfloxacin usage may result in heart rhythmic condition known
as long QT syndrome or QT prolongation which causes serious (rarely fatal) side
effects. The risk of syndrome may increases greatly if you have salt
imbalance in the blood (especially low level of potassium or magnesium in the
blood), have a very slow heart rhythm (called ‘bradycardia’), have a weak heart
(heart failure), have a history of heart attack (myocardial infarction), you
are female or elderly or you are taking other medicines that result in abnormal
ECG changes (see section Taking other medicines).
Notify your doctor, if you are using other drugs and if you have
heart related problems like heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in
EKG or family history of similar heart problems. Low levels of potassium and
magnesium may also increase the risk of long QT syndrome. Ask your doctor if you
can safely take Norfloxacin. If you may have severe renal impairment then
consult your doctor, he may prescribe you a lower dosage of this medicine.
Dosage

Take Norfloxacin as per
your doctor’s direction and refer the medicine leaflet to know more details
about this drug. Do not alter the dosage without your doctor permission. Also,
do not take this medicine after prescription period is over. Take this drug at
the same time on each day. Consume this drug on an empty stomach; usually you can
take 1 hour before or two hours after taking the meal. Drink plenty of
noncaffeine liquids.
This drug belongs to pregnancy category C drug. Animal
reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus while there are
no certain and well-controlled studies on humans, but potential benefits may
warrant use of the drug during the pregnancy.

Side
Effects
Some common side effects
pertaining to this medicine are headache, feeling dizzy, belly pain, upset
stomach or throwing up, loose stools (diarrhea), tendons may rarely get
irritated and tear. Rise slowly after a few minutes while you are on sitting or
lying position. Be careful while climbing. Many small meals, good mouth care,
sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help you to
recover from all these problems. Yogurt or probiotics products may help in

Precautions
Do not give this medicine
to the child below than 18 years of age. Tell your doctor about the allergies
and sign that you had while using this medicine like- rash; hives; itching;
shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or
throat; or any other signs. Also, inform your doctor if you have myasthenia
gravis, if you are breast-feeding. Avoid the consumption of alcohol if
you are using this medicine.
Interaction
with other drugs
Many other medicines
which may interfere with Norfloxacin are as follows: nitrofurantoin, a medicine
used in the treatment of infections, probenecid, a medicine used in the
treatment of gout and gouty arthritis, theophylline, found in certain medicines
used to treat asthma and some cough/decongestant medicines, caffeine-containing
medications (e.g. certain analgesics), ciclosporin, a medicine used to dampen
the body’s immune response, warfarin or other blood-thinning medicines,
multivitamins or products containing iron, magnesium, calcium or zinc, antacids
or sucralfate fenbufen, a medicine for rheumatism, oral contraceptives: this
medicine may decrease the effect of oral contraceptives. These are not all the
