Nevimune - 200mg

 

It is most often known with its generic name Nevirapine, which is an antiviral drug that prevents the human immunodeficiency virus or HIV from spreading in your body. It is generally prescribed for the treatment of HIV which is responsible for causing the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS.  It is sold under various trade names including Viramune and Nevimune (made by Cipla). It is also prescribed for other medical treatments which are not enlisted here.

 

 

Important information about Nevirapine

 

Nevirapine (Viramune, Nevimune) will not provide cure for HIV. You may be at the risk of spreading the virus to other people through infected blood (through needles, razors and toothbrush) or through unsafe sexual practices (ensure proper barrier contraception). You must take extra care about these things and employ proper measure so as to not spread virus.

 

Nevirapine may also cause severe damage to your liver. Get medical attention quickly if you have any of the following conditions of liver damage: severe pain in upper stomach which advances to the back, nausea and vomiting, fast heartbeats, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay colored stools, or jaundice. This medicine can also cause dreadful skin reactions, symptoms pertaining to this condition are fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain followed by a red or purple rash that spreads and caused blistering and peeling. Seek medical emergency in such conditions.  

It belongs to FDA pregnancy category B drug. It is not expected that it could harm an unborn baby while taken during the pregnancy. However, HIV can pass into the baby from his/her mother at the time of pregnancy. Remember to take all the medicines of HIV as prescribed by your doctor in order to prevent your baby from contracting the HIV virus.

Consult your doctor about taking this medicine during pregnancy. It can decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. Consult your doctor, about employing a proper form of contraceptive such as condoms, diaphragm, or spermicide, all of which are non-hormonal.

 

 

Before taking Nevirapine

 

Before taking Nevirapine, take care of all the above mentioned precautions and clear all the doubts about this medicine. Dosage information

 

Take Nevirapine (Viramune, Nevimune) exactly as your doctor prescribed. Follow the instructions written on patient’s leaflet. Do not alter the doses unless your doctor advices you to do so. Also, do not use the medicine after prescription period is over. Consume Nevirapine with or without food, or as prescribed by doctor. It is generally preferred to be taken only once per day for the initial two weeks, scheduled on the basis of twice doses per day frequency. Following the doses schedule with low doses can reduce the chances of skin reactions. HIV is usually treated with a combination of drugs.  Store all the medicine in a cool and dry place, far away from the reach of children.

What if your miss a dose?

 

You should take your medicine on the same time as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose of Nevirapine for unforeseen reasons, then take it instantly, but avoid the use when next scheduled dose time is close. If you miss the dose for 7 days, consult your doctor before starting it once again.   

             

 

What if you overdose?

 

In case of an overdose of Nevirapine, contact your doctor or seek medication care on the immediate basis. Overdose may cause swelling in the limbs, problems with sleepiong, weight loss, fever, pain or swelling in joint, red or tender bumps on your shins, wheezing, cough, or breathing troubles.

 

 

Things and activities to avoid

 

This drug could not safe your body from HIV. It will stop the growth of virus. Chances of spreading the HIV syndrome will still remain same through unprotected sex, infected razors, needles or toothbrush. So, avoid these practices and things. Also, avoid drinking alcohol as it may increase the risk of liver damage.

 

 

Side Effects

 

Some common side effects caused by this medicine are tiredness, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. It may also causes rash, that patient generally confused with normal or serious rashes condition. Increase in fat deposition may occur such as increased fat in deposition in the upper back and stomach areas whereas less fat in arms and legs while taking Nevirapine. Some patients may feel deterioration of previous medical condition as they experience the recovery, or develop new condition due to overactive immune system. Inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions.

 

 

Interaction with other drugs

 

Many other drugs can interact with Nevirapine including maraviroc, fentanyl, methadone, blood thinners, certain antibiotics like clarithromycin or rifabuting, antifungal drugs like fluconazole or voriconazole, ergot medicines (ergotamine, ergonovine, or methylergonovine), heart or blood pressure medicines, immunosuppressive medicines, or seizure medicines. Inform your doctor well in advance if you are using any of these medicines. Never start taking a new medicine without your doctor’s advice.
