What
is Prasugrel HCl?
Prasugrel is an
anti-coagulant drug that stops the blood platelets from coalescing (clotting)
due to several heart or blood vessel conditions.
Prasugrel is marketed and
sold under several trade names worldwide, one of which is Prasita (made by
Ranbaxy). It is primarily used to stop blood clots in those people with acute
coronary syndrome and who are going through a post heart attack or post stroke
procedure. Prasugrel is also prescribed for some disorders of heart or blood
vessels.
Prasugrel may also be
prescribed for conditions not described here.
Important
Information about Prasugrel HCl
Prasugrel HCl (Prasita)
is an anti coagulant or blood thinner which makes you prone to bleeding easier,
even with a minor injury. Contact your doctor or get emergency medical
attention if you have bleeding that doesn't stop. You may also have internal
bleeding (bleeding in stomach or intestines). Signs of internal bleeding
include black or bloody stools, bloody cough or vomit that looks like ground
coffee (signs of bleeding in gastrointestinal tract)
Remember not to take
NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) while taking Prasugrel HCl
without the consent of your doctor. Some of the NSAIDs are ibuprofen,
diflunisal, naproxen, etodolac, diclofenac, flurbiprofen, ketorolac,
indomethacin, ketoprofen, mefenamic acid, meloxicam, nabumetone, or others.
If you have a surgery or
any dental work scheduled in the near future, you must notify the surgeon or
dentist well ahead of the procedure date. You may be asked to temporarily
suspend the medication at least a week before so that you don't suffer from
severe bleeding at the time of surgery or dental procedure.
Before
taking Prasugrel HCl
Take care of all the
precautions and points mentioned above. Remember to discuss them with your
doctor prior to starting Prasugrel HCL. Do not take Prasugrel HCL (Prasita) if
you are allergic to it or if you have a number of conditions mentioned above. Share
your entire medical history with your doctor. It will help him or her to safely

Your Prasugrel HCl dosage
may alter from normal dosage and you may require some special testing to safely
take this medication if you have any of these conditions: hemophilia or other
bleeding or blood clotting disorder, severe liver disease, stomach ulcer, just
prior to or post a heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft or CABG
Prasugrel HCl belongs to FDA
pregnancy category B which means it is not expected to cause any harm to your
unborn baby if you take it during your pregnancy. It is not known whether
Prasugrel HCl can pass into breast milk and harm a nursing baby.
How
should I take Prasugrel HCl?
Take Prasugrel HCl
medication (Prasita) strictly as prescribed by your doctor and no changes
regarding its dosage and duration of using must be made without his or her
advice. Your doctor may change the dosage occasionally to get the maximum
benefit out of the medication.
Take Prasugrel HCl with
or without food. Make it a habit to take this medication at the same time every
day. Avoid crushing or breaking a Prasugrel tablet, and swallow it as it is.
Take all the precautions already mentioned while taking this medication.
Store Prasugrel HCl
medication in a cool and dry place as well as away from the reach of children
and pets.
What
if I miss a dose of Prasugrel HCl?
If you miss a dose of
Prasugrel HCl medication, take it as soon as you remember it. However, if the
time to take the next dose is near, skip the missed dose and take the next dose
as scheduled. Don't take extra medication to compensate for the missed dose.
What
if I overdose?
Get emergency medical
attention or call the Doctor immediately in case of an overdose of Prasugrel
HCl medication. Overdose of this medication can cause severe internal or
external bleeding, leading to bloody stools or vomiting, blurred vision, watery
eyes, walking troubles
Things
and Activities to avoid while taking Prasugrel HCl
Remember to avoid some of
the drugs already mentioned above while taking Prasugrel HCl medication
(Prasita) and activities that may put you at risk of bleeding or injury. Take
extra care while shaving and brushing your teeth.
Prasugrel
HCl side effects
Immediately stop using
Prasugrel HCl (Prasita) and seek medical attention if you get these serious
side effects due to it, prominent among which are signs of external and
internal bleeding: bleeding through nose or other nonstop bleeding; unexpected
vaginal bleeding, bloody or black stools (tarry color); bloody urine; or bloody
cough or vomit that looks like ground coffee. Some other serious side effects
are jaundice characterized by yellowing of skin and eyes, chest pain, severe
headache, speech problems, fever, easy bruising, weakness, or imbalance.
Some less serious side
effects include mild headache, back pain, minor chest pain, cough, nausea, or
tiredness.
The side effects listed
above are not a complete set of side effects which you may experience due to
Prasugrel HCl. Let your doctor know if you feel anything amiss and serious
after taking this medication.

depends on a lot of factors. Your doctor may fix your dosage depending on your
condition. Various conditions may require different dosages. Strictly follow

know if you are already taking other blood thinners like Warfarin.
