POSID is a
chemotherapy drug used for malignancies such as testicular cancer, lung cancer,
non-lymphocytic leukemia, glioblastoma multiforme and lymphoma.
How it
works?
Intake of this
anti-cancer drug slows and stops the growth of cancer cells in the body. At low
doses the medicine inhibits cells from entering cell cycle and at high doses,
cells entering mitosis are lysed.

Etoposide belongs to
a group of drugs called antineoplastics. This anti-cancer drug might be
sometimes used in a conditioning regimen prior to a bone marrow or blood stem
cell transplant.
Dosage
information
For combination
therapy: 50-100 mg/m2/day from days 1-5, or 100 mg/m2 on days 1, 3 and 5. The
doctor might repeat the course or increase or decrease the dosage looking at
the overall condition of the patient and other factors. The injection might be
diluted with saline to bring out the correct concentration before administration.

you overdose?
Although there are
no chances of overdose, still if the patient feels any kind of pain, stiffness

Things
to be taken care of
POSID is a pregnancy
category D drug, hence its intake would cause harm to the fetus. Females who
are trying to conceive or breast feeding need to notify doctor about the same
before taking this anti-cancer drug. The injection needs to be administered by
the doctor in a vein empty stomach. This medicine might decrease the platelet
count and this could lead to bruising, injury or bleeding. Patients are advised
to monitor their blood count and blood pressure regularly when taking this
medicine.
Side
Effects
POSID could cause
some side effects that would bother some and not all patients, these include:
• Decrease in blood counts
• Vomiting
• Nausea
• Anorexia
• Stomatitis
• Diarrhea
• Reversible alopecia
• Peripheral neuropathy
• Anaphylactoid reactions
• Local irritation and thrombophloebitis at the site of
injection
• Tongue inflammation
• Taste alteration
These symptoms and reactions need to be informed to the
doctor immediately and medical assistance has to be obtained without any delay.
Interaction
with other drugs
POSID might show
interactions with various cytotoxic drugs. This anti-cancer drug should not be
taken with drugs that inhibit phosphatase activity. Intake of Cyclosporin A may
reduce the clearance of POSID.
Avoid taking any medicine without doctor’s prescription when
taking this anti-cancer medicine. Do not consume any prohibited food item or
beverage as this might bring down efficacy of the drug. Always follow in
doctor’s dietary instructions with this medicine to avoid any kind of toxicity.
