Osteofos – 70 mg 

 

This drug constitutes a generic name Sodium Alendronate, which is manufactured under the brand names Fosamax, Osteofos (by Cipla) and other brand names worldwide. It is used to prevent osteoporosis caused by menopause or by taking steroids (both men and women). This medication changes the process of bone formation and breakdown in the body. It reduces the weakness due to bone loss and helping in the development of more bone mass production which may further prevent bone fractures. Sodium Alendronate is also used to treat Paget’s disease of bone in both men and women. It may be also prescribed for other diseases which are not listed above.

 

 

Important information about Sodium Alendronate

 

You should avoid the use of this medicine, if you are unable to sit upright or stand at least half an hour. Sodium Alendronate (Fosamax, Osteofos) may cause serious problem in stomach or esophagus (the passage from mouth to stomach). Always stay upright for 30 minutes after taking this medicine. Bone loss in jaw (osteonecrosis) has been observed in some people who are taking medicine similar to Sodium Alendronate.  Symptoms pertaining to bone loss in jaw are jaw pain, swelling, numbness, loose teeth, gum infection, or slow healing post injury or surgery involving gums. Your may be getting instantaneous development of osteonecrosis of the jaw if you have cancer or if you are taking chemotherapy, radiation, or steroids. Other conditions associated to osteonecrosis of the jaw include anemia, or blood clotting disorders.

 

If you are going for dental work, inform your doctor well in advance that you are taking Sodium Alendronate medication. You may be required to stop the medication for a short period of time. It is not a single form of treatment if you are the patient of bone loss disorder. Your osteoporosis treatment can be followed with a combination of diet which contains calcium, or vitamin D supplements, and weight control.

 

 

Before taking Sodium Alendronate

 

Before taking Sodium Alendronate, take care of all the above mentioned precautions and clear all the doubts about this medicine.  Do not consider this medication in use if your are allergic to Sodium Alendronate or any of its constituents, if you have hypocalcaemia (low levels of calcium), or issues with esophagus muscles movement, then don’t take this medication. Sodium Alendronate can be taken either once in daily routine or once per week depending on person to person. If you are following the weekly schedule, then take it on the same day each week and always before having food or drinking anything in the morning. Do not crush or chew the tablets, you must swallow the whole tablet with one glass full of water for best effects. You have to take this medicine for a long period of time (3-5 years approx) for better results. Always store it in cool or dry place. 

  

 

What if you miss a dose

 

If you miss a dose of Sodium Alendronate when you are on a daily routine, then you should not take the dose later in the day. If you are on weekly schedule, then have it first thing in the morning and continue the routine. Always remember not to take 2 tablets of this medicine in any conditions.

 

 

What if you overdose

 

In case of overdose, drink a full glass of milk and seek medical help or call your doctor on immediate basis. Don’t try to include vomiting or avoid lie down. Overdose of this medicine may cause stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, muscle cramps, numbness or tingling, muscle tightness in your face, seizure, irritability, or bizarre thoughts or behavior.

 

 

Things to avoid

 

Avoid taking other medicines such as multi-vitamins, multi-minerals, or antacids within 30 minutes of taking Sodium Alendronate tablet because they can create problems for this medicine to be properly absorbed in your body. Also, sit upright or avoid lying for at least half an hour after taking this tablet.

 

 

Side Effects

 

Get medical help immediately, if you experience any of these allergic signs while taking this medicine: hives, breathing difficulty, swelling on your face, lips, tongue, or throat.  Stop taking this medicine if you encounter following serious side effects- pain in chest; difficulty or pain while swallowing; pain or burning under the ribs or in the back; severe heartburn; burning pain in your upper stomach; or coughing up blood; new or deteriorating heartburn; fever; body ache; fly symptoms; extreme joint, bone, or muscle pain; new or unexplained pain in your thighs or hip; or pain, numbness, or swelling in jaw.  Some less serious side effects are: bloating; mild heartburn; mild nausea; vomiting; stomach pain; diarrhea; gas; constipation; mild joint pain or swelling; swelling in limbs; dizziness; eye pain; or headache. These are not all the side effects mentioned above. There may be others as well. Contact your doctor or seek medical attention immediately if you are experiencing these side effects.   

 

 

Interaction with other drugs

 

Keep a record of all medications which you may be using and share the details with your doctor. Many other drugs can interact with Sodium Alendronate, especially aspirin or other NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) like celecoxib, diclofenac, diflunisal ibuprofen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, ketorolac, meloxicam, naproxen, or piroxicam. These drugs may interact with Sodium Alendronate medication and effects on its working. Never start a new medication without your doctor’s permission.
