Diabetrol - 5 + 500mg

 

This drug has a generic name Glibenclamide Metformin which is a combination oral form medicine to treat type2 diabetes. It is made up of two active ingredients Glibenclamide and Metformin which are also available as individual drugs for the treatment of diabetes.

It is sold under various trade names across worldwide including Glucovance and Diabetrol (by Nicholas Pharma). Glibenclamide and Metformin helps in type 2 diabetes treatment by making the body control its blood sugar level. It is not recommended for type-1 diabetes and it may also be prescribed for other treatments which are not listed here.

 

 

Important information about Glibenclamide Metformin

 

You should avoid the use of this medicine, if you are allergic to it, or if you are suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis (a condition in which body lacks insulin level and employ fats in the place of glucose for energy purposes that result in ketones in the body). You may be advised to temporarily stop this medicine if you are scheduled for an X-Ray or CT scan test and require a dye to be injected intravenously. 

Prior taking this medicine, you should inform your doctor if you have liver or heart disease, an incident of heart attack or stroke in the past, or an enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD). Lactic acidosis has been observed in people who take Glibenclamide and Metformin. Get medical care immediately if you witness the symptoms of Lactic acidosis such as muscle pain or weakness, numb or cold feeling in your limbs, breathing trouble, pain, nausea with vomiting, slow or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, overall weakness, or lethargy. Symptoms of severe hypoglycemia are: blurred vision, severe lethargy, sweating, speech troubles, tremors, confusion, pain in stomach, and convulsions (seizure).

 

 

Things to avoid

 

You should strictly avoid the consumption of alcohol as alcohol can drastically reduce your blood sugar level which can be harmful and can lead to lactic acidosis.

 

 

Side Effects

 

Side effects caused by Glibenclamide and Metformin medication (Glucovance, Diabetrol) are hives, breathing difficulty, swelling in face, lips, tongue, or throat. Seek medical care immediately in case you experience following symptoms chills, muscle pain, breathing shortness, light headed feeling, feeling like you may pass out, stomach ache, increased sleepiness, or reduced heart rate.  Immediately stop using this medicine if you get following serious side effects: dark colored urine, pale or yellow skin, weakness, confusion, nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, appetite loss, clay colored stools, or jaundice. While, some less serious side effects are runny nose, sneezing, headache, symptoms of cold, headache, mild dizziness, mild nausea or vomiting, upset stomach, or diarrhea. The side effects of Glibenclamide and Metformin mentioned above are not only the ones, there may be some others. Call your doctor right away and get the medical attention immediately if you experience these side effects.

 

 

Interaction with other drugs

 

Notify your doctor if you are taking other medicines like: nifedipine, cimetidine, ranitidine, furosemide, digoxin, vancomycin, quinidine, vancomycin, trimethoprim, quinine, morphine, or amiloride. They can interfere with this medication significantly. You may get hypoglycemia, if you if you take Glibeclamide and Metformin with these medications: diuretics; isoniazid; steroids; birth control pills and other hormones; diet pills or medicines to treat asthma, colds or allergies; thyroid medicine; niacin; or phenothiazines. You may experience hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if you take Glibenclamide and Metformin with these medications: exenatide; some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; aspirin or other salicylates; exenatide; sulfa drugs; a monoamine oxidase inhibitor; other oral diabetes medications like acarbose, metformin, miglitol, rosiglitazone or others. The above mentioned lists of drugs which can interact with Glibenclamide and Metformin are non exhaustive and there may be some other drugs which interrupt the functioning of Glibenclamide and Metformin thereby increasing or reducing its effects of lowering your blood sugar level.
